Inmates Riot at St. Louis Jail Breaking Windows and Setting Fire

Dozens of inmates at St. Louis City Justice Center revolted on Sunday night over what prisoners and their families describe as “inhumane conditions” at the jail.

They left their cells and broke windows, set fires and threw debris onto the streets.

Some were carrying signs that read “help us” and others chanting “we want court dates”.

Detainees have been complaining about several issues including a lack of Covid-19 precautions, restrictions that have limited visits and no official court dates for their trials.

Nobody escaped during the chaos, though a makeshift rope was dropped from the third floor. After a few hours, police officers cleared the inmates from windows and the fire was extinguished.

Sunday night’s chaos comes about two months after 117 inmates caused similar destruction.
